This section will provide you with information regarding the European elections in 2024, including voting procedures and deadlines for registration, if you are an EU citizen who lives outside the European Union or in another EU country. If your country allows it, you can vote for candidates from your own country. You also have the option to vote for candidates in the EU country you live in.

You are eligible to vote in the European elections in Sweden if you are at least 18 years old on election day, and either a Swedish citizen, or an EU citizen residing in Sweden.

As a Swedish or EU citizen voting in Sweden, you usually vote in a polling station in the district where you are included in the electoral roll. The exact location of the relevant polling station is stated on the voting card. People entitled to vote will receive a voting card in the post, approximately three weeks before the elections. Your polling station will appear on your voting card.

You can also vote in advance at a voting location anywhere in Sweden. Advance voting starts 18 days before election day and goes on right up to election day itself.

As Swedish citizen you can vote from abroad by post or at the Swedish embassies and consulates. You must apply to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) every ten years to be included on the electoral roll from abroad, please find here the link to the form for registering to the electoral roll (available in Swedish).

You do not need to register. If you are entitled to vote, you will receive a voting card. It will be delivered by post approximately three weeks prior to the election. The voting card lists which elections you are entitled to vote in as well as the name, address, and opening hours of your polling station.EU-citizen voting in Sweden
If you are the citizen of another EU Member State other than Sweden you can choose whether you want to vote in Sweden or your country of citizenship. It is a precondition that you are a registered resident in Sweden. The County Administrative Board must receive your completed form to register to vote in Sweden at least 30 days prior to the election day.

If you are abroad, you can either vote by post or vote in advance at a Swedish embassy or consulate that organises vote reception.
If you wish to vote by post, you must have special postal voting materials. These materials can be ordered from the Swedish Election Authority, a municipality, or a Swedish embassy or Swedish consulate.
Postal votes shall be sent from abroad. Postal votes may be arranged no earlier than 45 days prior to election day. Postal votes must have arrived by the time votes are counted.
You can vote early at embassies and consulates not earlier than 24 days before election day. You cannot vote on election day from abroad.

If you are a citizen of an EU country and registered in Sweden, you can register or deregister on the Swedish electoral roll no later than 30 days before election day. At the beginning of 2024, the Election Authority will send a letter to all EU citizens registered in Sweden about notification to, or withdrawal from, the Swedish electoral roll. If you live abroad (Swedish citizen living abroad), you need to register for the electoral roll every ten years in order to remain on it.
