How to vote in Cyprus

The European elections in Cyprus will be held on 9 June, 2024, from 7.00 in the morning to 18.00 in the afternoon.

Voters will elect six Members of the European Parliament in 2024, the same number as in the 2019 elections.

Under EU law, all countries must use voting systems that ensure proportional representation, which means that the number of elected members from each party depends on the share of electoral votes obtained by the party. Cyprus uses preferential voting, which gives the voters the option to indicate their preferences within the coalition of political parties or independents list they choose.

Political parties or individuals wishing to stand for election must do so on 24 April, 2024, the nomination day. The full list of all candidates will be published once the objection period has ended.

As there will be six Members of the European Parliament from Cyprus, each political party will need to get at least 16.66% of the votes to secure a seat in Parliament in the first round of counting votes. For the second or third rounds, political parties/ coalitions/ tickets have to clear at least 1.8% of the votes.

In Cyprus there is just one national constituency, which means people across the country choose from the same list of candidates.

Voting is not compulsory in Cyprus.

You are eligible to vote in the European elections in Cyprus if you are:

• at least 18 years old on election day
  
• a Cypriot or an EU citizen with an habitual residence in Cyprus for a period of at least six months immediately preceding the date of acquisition of electoral qualifications, or with an habitual residence in any other EU country in the same six-month period, provided that, on the day of registration in the electoral roll, you have your habitual residence in Cyprus.
  

Consequently, as a Cypriot citizen who resides abroad permanently, you do not have the right to vote from abroad, unless you had met the six-month residency requirement prior to registering on the electoral roll and moved abroad afterwards.

Cypriots and other European citizens in Cyprus
As a Cypriot or European citizen in general, you vote at a specific polling station based on your residence.

Cypriot citizens abroad
Not all Cypriots from abroad can vote in the European elections.
If you meet the condition (residence in Cyprus for six months before your registration in the electoral roll and move abroad at a later stage) you are entitled to vote abroad.
The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus will operate polling centers in Greece, the United Kingdom and Belgium - in embassies or elsewhere - in cities where more than 50 voters request to vote there. Foreign voters are registered in a special electoral roll and can only vote in person on election day. Declarations can be submitted either electronically via the internet, or in paper form, until April 2, 2024.

You must have previously registered. You can download and fill in the registration form directly from the election service website Elections.gov.cy. You can also find the form at the District Administrations, Citizen Service Offices and District Post Offices.

People with disabilities have an absolute priority when exercising their right to vote. Polling stations officials have therefore been invited to facilitate them with concrete measures. People with a visual impairment or a physical disability may vote by themselves if they wish, with the help of a person they trust or with the help of the Presiding Officer, in the presence of an assistant officer.
