How to vote in Greece

The European elections in Greece will be held on 9 June 2024, from 7.00 in the morning to 19.00 in the afternoon. Postal votes must be sent to the Postal Vote Collection Committee within the relevant deadline, i.e. by 17:00 Greek time on June 8, 2024, in order to be counted as valid.

Voters will elect 21 Members of the European Parliament in 2024, the same number as in the 2019 elections.

Under EU law, all countries must use electoral systems that ensure proportional representation, meaning that the number of elected members of each party depends on the percentage of votes the party received. In Greece, cross-preference voting is used, which gives voters the opportunity to choose specific candidates. Up to four preference crosses can be placed. The candidates who receive the most preference crosses are elected, as long as their party has secured the corresponding seats.

Political parties must gather at least 3% of the vote to be able to elect an MEP.

The Greek territory constitutes a single electoral district for the election of the Members of the European Parliament. The political parties therefore propose uniform ballots for the whole country.

Voting is compulsory, but exemptions are foreseen for those above 70 years of age and for voters who are abroad. It is noted that the obligation has a persuasive purpose.

In Greece, the right to vote in the European elections is available to those who:

1. They turn 17 in the year of the elections (so those born before 31 December 2007)
2. They are either Greek citizens or citizens of an EU country with legal residence in Greece
