How to vote in Greece

Polling stations in Greece will be open on 9 June 2024, from 7.00 in the morning to 19.00 in the afternoon. Postal votes must be received by the relevant authorities by 17:00 Greek time on June 8, 2024, in order to be counted as valid.

Voters will elect 21 Members of the European Parliament in 2024, the same number as in the 2019 elections.

Under EU law, all countries must use electoral systems that ensure proportional representation, meaning that the number of elected members of each party depends on the percentage of votes the party received. In Greece, preference-based voting is used, which gives voters the opportunity to choose specific candidates. Up to four crosses can be placed next to the preferred candidates' names. The candidates who receive the most crosses are elected, as long as their party has secured the corresponding seats.

Political parties must gather at least 3% of the vote to be able to elect an MEP.

The Greek territory constitutes a single electoral district for the election of the Members of the European Parliament. The political parties therefore propose uniform ballots for the whole country.

Voting is compulsory, but exemptions are foreseen for those above 70 years of age and for voters who are abroad.

The electoral commissions are requested to facilitate you with every appropriate measure, while there is a specially designed area in each polling station. An accompanying voter is allowed at the screen, upon assessment by the president of the electoral commission of the polling station, under their responsibility and in their presence.
