How to vote in Hungary

In Hungary the voting will take place on 09/06/2024 6.00-19.00.

Voters will elect 21 Members of the European Parliament in 2024, the same as in the 2019 elections.

The election of Members of the European Parliament must be held in accordance with certain common provisions established by EU law such as proportional representation. It means that the number of elected members from each party depends on the share of electoral votes obtained by the party. Hungary uses closed lists, which means that the candidates will get mandates based on the order set by national parties and announced on the list preliminarily.

Hungarian citizens and citizens of other Member States of the EU who are eligible to stand as a candidate and nominated on a party list. Party list and candidates can be found on the website of the National Election Office (in Hungarian).

Political parties wishing to stand for the elections have to obtain the valid endorsement of nominations by 03/05/2024.

The electoral threshold is 5%, so parties would need to gain more than 5% of all the valid votes cast.

You have to vote in person at the polling station based on your residence. The location of your polling station is in the letter of advice. If you want to vote at another polling station, you have to submit a request.

• If you live in another EU country and have no official address in Hungary, you cannot vote for Hungarian lists.
  
• If you live outside the EU and have no official address in Hungary, you can vote by mail.
  
• If you live in Hungary but have no official address in Hungary, you can vote by mail.
  
• If you have a Hungarian address but want to vote from abroad, you have to do so in person at polling stations organised by the Hungarian embassy or consulate of the country where you are.
