How to vote in Slovakia

Political parties have to clear at least 5% of the votes in order to be elected to the Parliament.

In Slovakia there is just one national constituency, which means people across the country choose from the same list of candidates.

There is no legal obligation to vote in the European elections in Slovakia.

You are eligible to vote in the European elections in Slovakia if you are:

• at least 18 years old on election day
• a Slovak or an EU citizen with a permanent residence in Slovakia
• a Slovak citizen having neither a permanent residence in Slovakia, nor in the territory of another Member State of the European Union

If a citizen of the Slovak Republic permanently resides in another EU country, he or she can vote only in that country, and only for the MEPs of the country in which he or she lives.

In Slovakia you will have to vote in a specific polling station based on address of your permanent residence. If you are not able to vote at the polling district at which you are registered, you can ask the municipal office for a polling card that will enable you to vote in any polling district within Slovakia. The municipality of your permanent residence in Slovakia will notify you of the date and time of elections, the number of your polling district and the address of the polling station, together with the information about the voting procedure itself.
If you're an EU citizen it is necessary to apply for registration on the electoral roll no later than April 29, 2024. Entry in the list is performed by the respective municipality in which you have permanent residence in Slovakia. A citizen of the Slovak Republic who does not have a permanent residence in Slovakia nor in the territory of another Member State of the European Union, but is present in Slovakia on the day of the European elections, can cast a vote in any polling station upon presentation of a Slovak passport.

You are obliged to prove your identity upon arrival in the polling station by submitting a valid identity card or residence card of a citizen of the European Union.
If a voting card has been issued to the voters, they will submit it together with an ID card or a residence card.
If they are voters (citizens of the Slovak Republic) who do not live in Slovakia or in another EU country, they will submit a travel document (Slovak passport) and a declaration of permanent residence abroad.

Voters with a disability voting in the European elections in Slovakia have the possibility to take with them another person to the voting station in order to assist them. If you cannot come to the polling station, you can request representatives of the electoral commission to come to you with a portable ballot box.
